NewsProf. Kelley Lemon has been awarded a $100,000 grant through the Chancellor’s Call to Action Initiative, a commitment by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to focus the intellectual and scholarly talent of our university on two of the greatest challenges facing our society—racism and social injustice—and to seek new solutions. The Call to Action to Address Racism & Social Injustice Research Program provides support for academic research and the expansion of community-based knowledge that advances the understanding of systemic racism and generationally embedded racial disparity.

NewsOur 2024 All-Department Charrette, Urbana Eco-Futures: Envisioning Climate Resilience at the City’s Eastern Threshold, is taking place from Monday, Feb. 19, through Wednesday, Feb. 21. This is a collaborative design intensive in which students work in three large teams, each led by professionals from leading firms. The topic, site, and aims were developed by a committee of undergraduate and graduate students working with two faculty members.The professional team leaders for this year’s charrette will be Hannah Cusick and Rashad Tiam Watt, from Living Habitats; Julie Donofrio and Nate Wooten, from OLIN Labs; and Cody Axness and Samantha Shui, from site design group. The event will culminate in a presentation of outcomes on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 3:30pm, in the atrium of Temple Buell Hall.

NewsCongratulations to PhD in Landscape Architecture candidate Alexandre Champagne, who successfully defended his dissertation, “Mobilizing Landscape Architecture against Urban Precarity: Framing an Applied-Philosophy Approach through the Works of Henri Maldiney, Paul Ricœur, and Jacques Rancière,” earlier this week. Alexandre’s doctoral committee members include Prof. Elen Deming (Landscape Architecture), Prof. Brenda Farnell (Anthropology), Prof. Jennifer Monson (Dance and Landscape Architecture), and Prof. Deni Ruggeri (Landscape Architecture, Univ. of Maryland), with Prof. David Hays (Landscape Architecture) serving as chair. Last September, Alexandre began a full-time appointment on the faculty of Landscape Architecture at Boston Architectural College.
