International Students

Our department welcomes many international students into our BLA, MLA, and PhD programs. In fact, half of the students in our programs come from countries outside the US, including China, India, Korea, and more. In 2017, the University of Illinois ranked 5th among higher education institutions hosting international students, and international students make up 23.2% of the overall student enrollment.

At the University of Illinois and in our department, we work hard to make sure our international students feel safe, supported, and heard. The University of Illinois offers ample social and educational programming to help international students succeed. The University’s International Student and Scholar Services Center provides information and resources about applying, student life, academic support, student visas, and more.

International students go through the same application process as domestic students, with a few additional requirements. We encourage you to be proactive and contact our Academic Affairs Coordinator (ladept@illinois.edu) for support as you navigate the application process.

All three of our accredited degrees—BLA, MLA, and Ph.D.—are  STEM-classifed, so international students with F-1 visas are eligible to remain in the US for OPT (Optional Practical Training) employment for up to three years and two months after graduation, and those granted H-1b visas can stay an additional six years (total of 9 years).

If you want to study landscape architecture in an intellectually rigorous, internationally diverse, and welcoming environment, the programs at Illinois are an ideal choice.
