Urban Mobilities and the Panoramic Vision: Perspectives on Media Archaeology

In the nineteenth century, media culture was in the making, in both private and public places. Complex relationships developed between modes of transportation and media. The moving panorama was one, but by far not the only example. The urban environment itself was conceived in terms of media culture. A perfect example was the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900. Not only did it exhibit panoramas, dioramas, and other attractions, the exhibition area itself was conceived by many as a media experience. As this lecture will demonstrate, Le Trottoir Roulant, the moving walkway that encircled the grounds, played a particularly important role in defining the city as a panoramic experience.
